Lamar County Trojans Cross Country
Twilight in the Grove – 8/22/15
After graduating ten seniors following the 2014 season, the new look Trojans and Lady Trojans cross country teams opened their seasons on Saturday, August 22nd, 2015 at the 1st Annual Twilight in the Grove hosted by Locust Grove High School.
The field was packed with top 4A and 5A schools, 13 in all, on the hot, muggy evening in Locust Grove. And, the 5K course proved to be challenging as runners were continuously trotting up and over the rolling landscape and through the woods around Locust Grove high and middle schools.
Junior Wyatt Harris led the JV Trojans in the first race of the day by earning a medal and finishing 9th overall with a time of 24:13. Newcomer, Abel Manley was next for the JV Trojans with an overall placement of 28th. Manley was followed by fellow Freshmen AJ Phillips (44th) and Davis Varner (48th). Sophomore Patrick Whitelock (68th) also ran in the JV race. The JV Trojans finished 8th overall.
Senior Ashley Cannon, the Lady Trojans new #1 runner, cracked the top 10 in the girl’s varsity race finishing 10th overall in 25:15. Sophomore Margaret Henry (22nd) finished second for the Lady Trojans narrowly missing a medal as they went out to the top 20 runners overall. Tamara Nale (32nd), Lexi Hatten (39th) and Yulia Hope (41st) ran together nearly the entire race and were followed closely by newcomers Riley Fuller (50th) and Skylar Bedgood (51st). Kayleigh Swanson (70th) and Lizzie Ctibor (77th) also ran for the Lady Trojans. The Lady Trojans finished 6th overall.
Junior Frank Spafford took charge for the boy’s team by finishing 11th overall with a respectable 19:45 on the demanding course. Steve Lopez (37th) and Adam Basso (57th) also ran well. Canon Templeton (73rd) and Dawson Davis (80th) rounded out the scorers for the Trojans. Chase Thompson (82nd), Caleb Thompson (86th), John Griner (88th) and Ben Wall (96th) also ran in the varsity race. The Trojans finished 9th overall.
“While our times were nothing to brag about, we learned a lot about our team as we move forward with our season. We have a great deal of young as well as new runners who gained some experience. And, our middle of the pack runners ran together on both the boy’s and girl’s teams, so we are excited to see what we can do this year.”
The next race for the Trojans Cross Country program will be Saturday, September 5th at the Lamar County Ag/Expo Center here in Barnesville. It is the 3rd Annual Taylor Davis Memorial race, honoring the memory of former Trojan runner, Taylor Davis. The middle school team will be making its 2015 debut at 8:15 am followed by the junior varsity and varsity races.
